DK Bose lands Censor Board in trouble

The song DK Bose has now landed the Censor Board in trouble with the I&B Ministry sending in a formal mail questioning their actions

Giving a go ahead to the Delhi Belly song DK Bose seems to have landed the censor board in a lot of trouble. Though producer Aamir Khan and actor Imran Khan are happy about the decision, the masses aren't.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Censor Board have been receiving letters from the angry masses demanding an 'explanation' for having passed a song with a word that sounds obscene when played in loop. The I&B Ministry in turn has written to the censor board asking them to look into the matter.

A senior member from the censor board, on request of anonymity, confirmed the same to us and said, "Haan aisa hota hai. If there is a public protest against any decision taken by the board, the I&B Ministry asks the board to justify their actions."

Surprisingly, it was the sole decision of the CEO of the censor board, Pankaja Thakur to give the song a go ahead. No other member of the committee was present for the screening of the same, informed a source. "It is enough to have just one member present for any screening," the source added.

The board however, was not unified on the decision. "The song DK Bose should not have been passed. But what can we do? We surely cannot contest the decision taken by our seniors (read Pankaja Thakur)," revealed the senior member of the board.

And now, this decision has sparked off more than just controversies within the industry. A source close to the censor board informed, "Parents are really angry with the song. It's a part of trailers that are screened in theatres along with U certified films, though Delhi Belly itself has received an A certification. It's also running on national television. Actually, the song did raise a few eyebrows within the censor board as well."

The CEO of the censor board, Pankaja Thakur seemingly, remains impervious to such wide spread dissatisfaction. When contacted, she said, "The I&B Ministry sent us a complaint that was filed on their website. And we have replied back. And yes, we have also received a few complaints from people. But that's okay. We even received objections to Sheila Ki Jawaani ( Tees Maar Khan) and Munni Badnaam Hui (Dabangg) as well."

Even the complaints from the people of India has failed to budge Pankaja's decision. "We do not certify backwards," she said.

Interestingly, the Assistant Regional Officer of the censor board, Amitabh Sharma was transferred to Bangalore while the song in question was still on the table. While the industry is abuzz with stories of Sharma being relocated because he had objected to the song, Pankaja denied all such charges. "I am not a tyrant. It's just that the Bangalore office needed somebody. Who knows, Amitabh might be back in some time," said Pankaja.

Aamir's spokesperson defended, "DK Bose is just a name. Some people are capable of seeing abusive language in everything. It depends on how your mind works. We can't help it."

Maqbool Fida Husain passes away in London

Renowned artist MF Husain, whose paintings made waves and also stirred controversies, passed away in Royal Brompton Hospital on Thursday. He was 95.

According to reports, Husain was being treated for fluids in his lungs. However, the exact cause of his death is yet to be known.

Husain was in a self-imposed exile since 2006 after some of his paintings of Hindu deities led to life threats and attacks. Husain eventually adopted the citizenship of Qatar.

The paintings in question were created in 1970, but did not become an issue until 1996, when they were printed in Vichar Mimansa, a Hindi monthly magazine.

In response, eight criminal complaints were filed against Husain. In 2004, Delhi High Court dismissed these complaints of "promoting enmity between different groups ... by painting Hindu goddesses - Durga and Sarswati, that was later compromised by Hindus".

In 1998 Husain's house was attacked by some Hindu groups like Bajrang Dal and his art works were vandalised.

In February 2006, Husain was charged with hurting sentiments of people because of his nude portraits of Hindu gods and goddesses.

A series of cases were brought against him and a court case related to the alleged obscene depiction of Hindu goddesses in his paintings resulted in issuing a non-bailable warrant against Husain after he failed to respond to summons.

Husain's initial success as an artist was in the late 1940s.

In 1947, he joined the Progressive Artists' Group, founded by Francis Newton Souza. This was a group of young artists who wished to break with the nationalist traditions established by the Bengal school of art and to encourage an Indian avant-garde, engaged at an international level.

In 1952, his first solo exhibition was held at Zürich and over the next few years, his work was widely seen in Europe and the US.

In 1955, he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shree prize by the Government of India.

According to Forbes magazine, he has been called the "Picasso of India".
